Assistant Buyer (Retail)

Badham Pharmacy is looking to recruit a full time Assistant Buyer for the retail side of the company. Purpose of role

To maximise the retail sales profit in the branches, through the selection, buying and merchandising of a range of non-ethical products for the Company. Maximise profits and turnover by selecting a commercially viable range of merchandise at competitive prices, for sale in retail areas of our pharmacies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the EPOS system including stock maintenance and training of staff.
  • Co-ordinate monthly promotional activities in the branches.
  • Work with staff at branches to identify what customers want and prices they are willing to pay for products and merchandise, given the branch locations and demographics.
  • React to and forecast market trends taking into account consumer buying patterns; seasonal and cultural trends.
  • Optimise the sales volume and profitability of designated profit areas.
  • Co-ordinate the corporate image of all branches through effective liaison and collaborative working with staff and managers.
  • Attend a range of trade shows and exhibitions to select and assemble a new collections of products
  • Monthly review of performance indicators, such as sales and discount levels. 
  • Maintaining relationships with existing suppliers and sourcing new suppliers for future products.
  • Use specialist computer software, for example to handle sales statistics, produce sales projections and present spreadsheets 
  • Monitor slow sellers and take action to reduce prices or set promotions as necessary.
  • Meet suppliers, negotiate cost price, agree timescales, delivery dates and complete the necessary paperwork.
  • Co-ordinate quarterly stock take including analysis of results and identify discrepancies.
  • Promote the corporate image of a professional pharmacy.
  • Undertake any task reasonably requested by the Directors.

Personal specification - experience & knowledge


  • Educated to A level standard; NVQ 3/4 
  • Experience within a retail sales environment
  • Self motivated with a strong desire to succeed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a highly professional manner used at all times with work colleagues, customers and external contacts
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office products.
  • Good analytical and numerical skills


  • Experience of buying stock over multi sites
  • Experience of stock control
  • Experience of merchandising
  • Experience of using an EPOS system
  • High competency in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Experience of report writing
  • An understanding of the importance of margin and markup when making pricing decisions.

Badham Pharmacy is an award-winning independent pharmacy chain headquartered in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Founded in 1940 by Richard G. Badham, the family business is now managed by second generation Peter, his wife Lin and their son Charles.
